Frequently Asked Questions

Who can benefit from a Patient Advocate?

The healthcare system has become incredibly complicated and only works for those that know how to navigate effectively. EVERYONE needs a patient advocate: including those with new or complex diagnoses, chronic illnesses, older adults, caregivers, or individuals who feel overwhelmed, stressed, or unsure how to interpret medical information and decisions. Also, those coordinating care for children or aging parents can benefit from our support.

1

A patient advocate guides patients through the health care system, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up. They help patients communicate with providers, understand information, arrange appointments/tests, and help access financial, legal, and social support. They may also work with insurers, employers, and others involved in a patient’s care.

2

Self-advocacy is important, however, during a medical crisis it’s often not enough. Illness, stress, and medications can limit a patient’s ability to process information or make clear decisions. The health system is complex, communication gaps are common, and power dynamics can make speaking up difficult. At the same time, crises often require quick, informed choices and careful coordination. A patient advocate helps fill these gaps by ensuring information is understood, communication is clear, and essential logistical and emotional support are in place.
